Where did you learn to knit Julie?

Knitting, for me, comes from my mom and my grandmother.

I don’t exactly remember when I started knitting but I know I was not going to school yet.

The first memory I have is my grandmother showing me how to cast-on.

I must have done it a thousand times. “That’s the base when you will be able to do it with your eyes closed, you can come back to see me so I show you the next step.”

Next step, knit stitch. That also, I did a lot of! I had a ball of yarn and some needles. I would knit all the yarn and when there was none left I would unravel and start again ( My grandmother did not tell me to do that by the way. I was the one who wanted to do that….!)

I sure did knit my fair share of scarf as a young child!

When I think about knitting, I see all the familly sitting in the veranda during the summer months.

I played in the pool all day, we ate, and now we can’t go back in the pool because according to my grandfather if you go for a swim after a meal you will have a cramp and you will drown (scary right?).

So instead we drink tea, eat cookies and knit.

Some other times I recall my grandmother sitting in her chair singing Zachary Richard while knitting. “Travailler c’est trop dure mais voler c’est pas beau, d’mander la charité c’est quelque chose que je peux pas faire…”

My mother, she’s an original. She is the one who gave me the desire to transform everything.

My creative side I take from her. Knitting for my mom is without a pattern. You take yarn, your needles and off you go! There are no limits.

Today we have less occasions to knit together, so when we do I cherish it!

Because for me family is so important and I will never be able to say how much I hold dear everything I’ve learned from them and even more important how much I love them!
